5th Annual Stillwater Music Festival
Southern Theater, 1420 Washington Avenue South Minneapolis, MN 55454-1038
The 5th Annual Stillwater Music Festival is here! The festival begins with a concert on Tuesday, August 24th 7:30 PM co-presented by the Southern Theater in Minneapolis, a unique venue we've been looking to partner with for some time. This evening will be a shared bill between Brooklyn Rider and the chamber/rock trio 2 Foot Yard. Comprised of violinist/vocalist Carla Kihlstedt, cellist/vocalist Marika Hughes, and guitarist/percussionist Shahzad Ismaily, 2 Foot Yard is a group of kindred musical adventurers who write original songs that "inventively straddle the classical and vernacular worlds without compromise to either side" (Stereophile Magazine). A focal point for the evening will be the Minnesota premiere of A Blue Hat Washed Up On Shore, a new collaborative piece between Brooklyn Rider and 2 Foot Yard loosely based on Alan Lightman's best-selling novella on the many natures of time, Einstein's Dreams. This special evening will also include sets by each group that will feature their signature repertoire. Brooklyn Rider will be joined by the great shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo-flute) player Kojiro Umezaki. Kojiro is a friend and colleague from the Silk Road Ensemble and seamlessly integrates his traditional instrument into a wide variety of situations, ranging from his jazz group Beat In Fractions to technology-based music to the traditional repertoire of Japan.
Tickets available only through the Southern Theater website:
general admission $25, student rush $12

5th Annual Stillwater Music Festival
Washington Historic Courthouse, 101 Pine Street West Stillwater, MN 55082-4994
The first main concert in Stillwater will take place Friday, August 27th 8:00 PM. This concert is a celebration of Brooklyn Rider’s new album called Dominant Curve. That’s right! We have a brand new album that is now available at www.brooklynrider.com or www.inacirclerecords.com, as well as other digital distributors. Much like the album, this concert will be centered around the great Debussy Quartet in G minor. Some of you may remember that we played the Debussy Quartet in our very first season of the Stillwater Music Festival. We are really looking forward to playing it again five very exciting years later and after the recent recording. Kojiro will join us again for this program, this time for the Minnesota premiere of his piece for shakuhachi, string quartet and electronics called "(Cycles) what falls must rise", which is also featured on Dominant Curve.

Did you know that the members of Brooklyn Rider are also Knights? The festival finale, set for Tuesday, August 31st 8:00 PM, will be the Stillwater Music Festival debut of The Knights, the dynamic New York-based ensemble founded by the brothers Jacobsen. Joining us as a soloist in two of Astor Piazzolla's fiery tango-influenced "Seasons" will be violinist Steven Copes, our friend and concertmaster of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra! The program focuses on music of the Americas, which will include Aaron Copland's timeless "Appalachian Spring", Gabriel Lena Frank's romp through the Andes, "Leyandas", John Adams' moving "Christian Zeal and Activity" and music from Argentinian-born firebrand and musical omnivore, Osvaldo Golijov.

CD Release party+ Art Gallery Opening in NYC
NYC. details soon
Brooklyn Rider would love to invite you to a celebration of our new album, Dominant Curve, (released on In a Circle Records), along with a one-night-only showing of the Brooklyn Rider Art Gallery on Monday, March 15 at one of our favorite venues in New York - the Angel Orensanz Foundation. We are excited to take this opportunity to perform the album in its entirety. Along with the album's centerpiece, Claude Debussy's String Quartet in G minor, we will present four new works created for Brooklyn Rider in 2009 by our friends: Kojiro Umezaki, Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky and Justin Messina, as well as our very own composer-in-residence, violinist Colin Jacobsen.
The extraordinary fin de siecle world of Claude Debussy and his friendship with many well-known musicians, writers, and artists of his day serves as a model and source of inspiration for us. In this spirit, the March 15 event will also introduce the Brooklyn Rider Art Gallery, normally exhibited as a virtual gallery housed on our website at www.brooklynrider.com. The gallery celebrates artists of diverse backgrounds and means of expression who are united by common creative energies and through their friendships with the members of Brooklyn Rider. On display for one night only will be selected works of Golnar Adili, Mary Frank, William Merkens, Kevork Mourad and Andrew Nofsinger. Boston-based artist Lennie Peterson’s visual responses to the music on Dominant Curve, which are featured in the album’s accompanying booklet, will be exhibited as well.
We hope you join us for this very special night. You'll find all the info you need below. We encourage you to get tickets soon!
